The goal of the Migrant Education Program is to ensure that all migratory children reach challenging academic standards and graduate with a high school diploma (or complete an HSED) that prepares them for responsible citizenship, further learning, and productive employment.

 

 

As a Migrant Education Program (MEP) Advocate, you will be responsible for providing supplemental support services to migrant farmworker families within NW Kansas. Your role will involve outreach to schools, community services, and families/students. The advocate works with the youth to set and achieve educational, work, and personal goals. This position works with local schools/education agencies, community agencies, and other pertinent organizations to design a program for individuals and families that leads to a continued and successful education. This position involves extensive regional and in-state travel and working in various locations, including homes, schools, community sites, workplaces, and agribusiness areas. 

This position is part of a team of advocates working across Kansas to provide services to students. This position is hybrid in nature, requiring at least 2-3 in person visits with the student in the home or other agreed-upon location within the community per year. The remainder of the services will be provided via Zoom or other online formats.

 

Qualifications:

• Proficient in basic technology applications, including Microsoft Office
• Experience in language acquisition instructional methods and development of instructional materials
• Valid driver’s license
• Flexibility and cultural competence
• Excellent organizational and communication skills
• Bilingual in English and Spanish (fluent in both spoken and written) is required. The candidate must be able to seamlessly switch between languages to meet the needs of both English and Spanish-speaking clients

Some Responsibilities and Requirements Include: 

 

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to travel at least three times per year to various locations within the designated region or community to engage with migrant families and school districts. This may involve driving long distances.
• Work extended and flexible hours to accommodate family/student availability. This may include evenings and weekends.
• Strong verbal communication skills are essential for effectively engaging with migrant families, school district personnel, and community members. 
• Strong interpersonal skills, empathy, and cultural sensitivity to connect with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
• Strong organizational skills are essential for managing these responsibilities effectively.

Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

• Develop a caseload with newly enrolled students, community agencies, and school districts.
• Maintain a database of migratory families and services provided.
• Utilize the MSIX (Migrant Student Information Exchange) system for move notifications and updates.
• Utilize the MIS2000 Database to claim students on your caseload, enter residency verifications, complete Priority for Service, and enter services provided in a timely manner (at least weekly). This includes any important information regarding family needs.
• Ensure compliance with FERPA regulations.
• Provide monthly service updates via Zoom to your Supervisor.
• Assist in developing an Individualized Student Service Plan for preK-12 students, which requires communicating and completing Student Profiles for each student on your caseload.
• Provide instructional and advocacy support to preK-12 and OSY students.
• Support youth in acquiring their educational, work, or personal goals.
• Link community resources and youth/families as needs indicate.
• Serve as a liaison between school personnel and families to support student success.
• Support instruction on location or virtually with materials, technical assistance, and necessary resources. 
• Monitor preK-12 student progress and provide OSY instructional support in ESL, Math, Reading, GED, and Life Skills.
• A 40-hour work week, using flexible scheduling, to meet the needs of students/families and to prevent pulling students from school-provided services and classes.
• Contact the recruiter when a student is close to the end of eligibility so they can be interviewed. Provide the recruiter with any leads from schools and families.
